Working days = weekdays (Mon–Fri) minus legal holidays that fall on a weekday. A legal holiday on a weekend is not counted again. Daily norm: 8 hours.
How working days are counted
A working day is a weekday, Monday to Friday, that is not a public holiday. To count the working days between two dates, count every day of the period, the first and the last included, then take out the weekend days and the public holidays that fall on a weekday.
A public holiday that falls on a Saturday or a Sunday is not taken out a second time: the day was already off, so the number of working days does not change. In 2026, 5 public holidays fall on a weekend in Romania: 24 January, 12 April, 31 May, 15 August, and 26 December.
Work hours are the working days multiplied by the hours worked each day: 8 hours a day at full time, fewer part time. In October 2026, 22 working days make 176 hours at 8 hours a day, 132 hours at 6 hours a day, and 88 hours at 4 hours a day.
Normal working time, 8 hours a day and 40 hours a week, is set by the Labour Code: Law 53/2003, Art. 112(1).
Worked examples
Here is the count for a month, a quarter and the whole of 2026: the weekend days and the public holidays that fall on a weekday come off the calendar days.
- Working days October 2026: 31 calendar days − 9 weekend days − 0 weekdays off for public holidays = 22 working days, or 176 hours at full time.
- Working days Q4 2026 (October–December): 92 calendar days − 26 weekend days − 3 weekdays off for public holidays = 63 working days, or 504 hours at full time. By month: October (22), November (20), December (21).
- Working days 2026: 365 calendar days − 104 weekend days − 11 weekdays off for public holidays = 250 working days, or 2000 hours at full time.
Frequently asked questions
Count every day from the first date to the last, both included, then take out the weekend days and the public holidays that fall on a weekday. In 2026, for example, 104 weekend days and 12 public holidays on 11 weekdays come off its 365 days, which leaves 250 working days in Romania. The calculator above does the count for any period in 2026–2028.
A working day is a weekday (Mon–Fri) that is not a legal public holiday. Weekends and legal holidays are excluded.
No. In Romania a legal holiday that lands on a Saturday or Sunday does not reduce the number of working days, because the weekend is already a day off. In 2026, 5 of Romania's 17 public holidays fall on a weekend.
A month's working hours are its working days times 8, at full time. In 2026 a month in Romania has between 18 and 23 working days, so between 144 and 184 hours: the fewest in January; the most in July.
The full-time norm is 8 hours a day (Law 53/2003, Art. 112(1)), so work hours = working days × 8. Part time, multiply by the hours in the contract instead, for example by 6 or by 4.
The calculator covers 2026, 2027, and 2028, the years for which verified public-holiday data is available.
