Leave planning
Vacation Planner — Maximize Your Days Off
Tell the planner how many leave days you have and it builds a plan that gets you as many days off as it can for that budget — the dates to request off, the total days off you get, and how good the trade is.

How does the planner work?
The planner first finds the periods where leave days in the chosen year bridge a public holiday to a weekend. It then compares every non-overlapping combination of those bridges and gives you the one that fits your budget and brings the most days off. The plan spends only the leave of the year you choose: every leave day it suggests falls in that year. A break can still start or end in the neighbouring year when weekends and public holidays carry it there — from Christmas to New Year, for example — and all of its days off count. For the current year it compares only the bridges whose leave days all fall today or later, and counts only the days off still to come.
For the number of leave days you choose, the plan — the “Most days off” one, when the planner offers two — gives you the most days off possible, under these rules:
- a break runs at least three days in a row and holds at least one public holiday and at least one leave day;
- apart from your leave, the only days off are Saturdays, Sundays and the public holidays the whole country keeps;
- only the working days you take off count as leave days;
- every leave day falls in the year you chose and comes out of that year's allowance;
- two breaks in the plan are separated by at least one working day — otherwise they would be one;
- if you set a longest single break, no break runs longer;
- in the current year, the planner takes leave only from today on and counts only the days off still to come — of a break that has already begun, only what is left is held to the longest single break.
The rules leave out any other condition the law or your employer may set — for example, that part of your leave be taken in one go.
We have also checked the result with a second method, which walks the calendar day by day, for every year, number of leave days and longest single break you can choose here: for the whole year, and for the rest of it from the first of every month.

Frequently asked questions
Total days off = all consecutive non-working days, including your vacation days + weekends + public holidays in that period.
Efficiency = Total days off / Vacation days needed. Higher is better.
Yes — 21 is the default. Set the slider to your own number and the plan is recomputed for that exact budget.
It compares every non-overlapping combination of the bridges it finds that fits your budget, and keeps the one with the most days off. It spends only the leave of the year you choose, but a break can start or end in the neighbouring year when weekends and public holidays carry it there — from Christmas to New Year, for example — and all of its days off count. Not by the planner's rules. For the number of leave days you choose, the plan (the "Most days off" one, when the planner offers two) gives you the most days off possible. In short: every break holds at least one public holiday and at least one leave day, only the working days you take off count as leave days, and every leave day falls in the year you chose. The full list of rules is on this page, under "How does the planner work?". The rules leave out any other condition the law or your employer may set. We have also checked the result with a second method, which walks the calendar day by day.
No. The plan never spends more leave days than the number you set, and the breaks it picks never overlap, so no day is counted twice.
Use the "Longest single break" control to cap how long any single break may run. The planner then builds the plan with the most days off within that cap.
